"Educating the mind without educating the
heart is no education at all" - Aristotle
The words
by Aristotle empathise passion. A passion for your future. A passion to
succeed. Therefore passion is a pre-requisite in all careers. This is why
members of Vuka Vheneka were enthusiastic about giving a Get Up and Lead career
talk at El Shaddai School in Sunway City. The selfless activity was planned by
Miss Mitchell Muchenje in the hopes of igniting a fire in the hearts of the
younger generation concerning their future. The Get Up and Lead Career Series
is Vuka Vheneka’s debut activity that aims to equip students with to shape their future careers and getting the
most of life after high school.
In most schools, this vital aspect is neglected as
academics take centre stage. However, just like planting a tree and not
watering it, providing academic knowledge and not giving career guidance
results in the passion withering and dying. The speakers addressed an audience
of Form 3s to Upper 6s and explained to them different options they can take up
at tertiary level, focusing on those offered at the University of Zimbabwe.
Rumbidzai Mapanzure spoke on Foreign Languages, Political Science and
International Relations. Nyasha Matare spoke on Economics, Population Studies
and Administration. Devon Sakudya who was also the Master of Ceremony, spoke on
Social Work, Sociology and Psychology. Mitchell spoke on English and Media
Studies and Law. Also present were Joseph Kurebwa , Ruvimbo Tigere and Ruva
Mapanzure .
An open discussion ensued as the students asked questions on
certain aspects of the courses and of university life. All speakers were able
to give the students sound advice regarding university life and the atmosphere
was convivial. To end off our afternoon, the Headmaster thanked the
organisation for the extraordinary work they were doing in shaping the youth
and gave the pupils more advice on resisting temptation, dreaming it and
achieving it. Many thanks to the Headmaster and the students for an enticing
afternoon and to the Head Girl and Head Boy who gave the vote of thanks. The
session had started with prayer from a student and ended with a prayer from the
Deputy Head Girl. It was a very refreshing afternoon as we shared from one
student to another.
